Fish Passage Barriers
Defined as natural or anthropogenic features that prevent or inhibit the movement of salmon and steelhead, these include:
SSHIAP recognizes the variable blocking potential (complete, partial, none, unknown, and artificial passage) of barriers with respect to fish species (e.g. swimming capability) and hydrology (e.g. run timing).
Fish passage barrier information within SSHIAP is obtained from a number of sources. These sources include:
- The WDFW Salmonid Screening, Habitat Enhancement and Restoration (SSHEAR) Fish Passage database
- Other culvert inventories (Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), County, Conservation Districts, etc.)

- Washington Conservation Commission Limiting Factors Analyses [link]
- Stream surveys
- Watershed analyses
- Personal communication with local biologists.
Barrier information in the SSHIAP database can be used for answering the following types of questions:
- How much habitat is blocked by culverts, dams, or other structures?
- What is the quality of habitat blocked by a particular structure?
